Indicating that he is confident he "made the exact use of the money that was intended, [respecting?] Capt. Bailey" and expressing his surprise that Mrs. [Johns?] would have imparted any news to the contrary; blaming it on the "meddling, defamatory, evil spirit of this cursed place" and assuring him that he need not worry about his reputation.
